Velma Lanigan

Mrs. Velma Moody Lanigan, age 91, of Douglas passed away early Monday morning, at her residence, following a short illness. She was born March 24, 1923 to the late Otis Miles Moody and the late Lizzie Smith Moody. Mrs. Lanigan, a native of Bacon County, had lived in the Coffee County area since 1984. She and her late husband of 31 years, Bernice Lanigan, were partners in the Lanigan Oil Company in Savannah for several years. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Grace Lanigan Rigdon, a sister, Vernell Purvis, 2 brothers, Calvin C. Moody, Eugene Moody, and a nephew, Dayne Purvis. Mrs. Lanigan was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church. Survivors include: 1 Daughter: Anne Lanigan McLain of Douglas, Ga.; Grandson: Will McLain of Douglas, Ga.; Granddaughter: Michelle (Michael) O’Conner of Vero Beach, Florida.; 3 Great Grandchildren.; 1 Brother: Alfred Moody of Waycross, Ga.; Special Nieces: Maudine (Joe) Wright; Eulene (Benny) Peterson; Annelle (Loren) Shrouder; Dale (Wendell) Batten; a nephew, Allen J. Purvis, all of Douglas, Ga., and other special Family & Friends. Funeral Services were held Wednesday morning, April 9, 2014, at 11:00 A. M., at the Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home, with Rev. Britt Peavy officiating. The Interment followed in the Hillcrest Abbey East Cemetery in Savannah, at 4:00 P. M., with Sister Essie Swinson, officiating, and a special poem and a closing prayer being given by Rev. Britt Peavy. Special Musical Selections, “How Great Thou Art”, and “Because He Lives”, were presented by the Soloist, Dr. Jamie Shrouder, with Robyn Vickers, at the Piano. “Pre-Lude” and “Post-Lude” soft hymns were rendered by the Pianist, Robyn Vickers. At the close of the graveside, the Congregation presented a special musical selection, “Amazing Grave” led by Rev. Britt Peavy. Active Pallbearers were: Jordan Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Drew Harper, Michael Purvis, David Purvis, Odis Paulk, Chris Malphus, Justin Roberts, and Mitchell Batten. Honorary Pallbearers were Members of the Lucille Holt Sunday School Class of Eastside Baptist Church. Ricketson Funeral Home was in charge of the Arrangements.
